5 Diet Principles for Chronic Nephritis Patients

5 Diet Principles for Chronic Nephritis Patients
As long as you control these five diet principles, you will get well quickly from chronic nephritis.

Chronic glomerulonephritis has a variety of clinical symptoms, ranging from asymptomatic to marked hematuria, proteinuria, edema, hypertension, etc. In addition to correct, reasonable and effective drug treatment, proper diet and exercise are of great significance to the prognosis of the disease. For nephritis patients, diet should be given high quality protein, low phosphorus, high vitamin diet. Besides, increase your sugar intake to ensure adequate calories, and reduce the breakdown of your own proteins. Limit sodium intake if you have edema and/or high blood pressure.

Patients with chronic nephritis should be aware of these five points when they are assisted by diet.

1. Low quantity but high quality protein diet. High quality protein food refers to lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs, milk and so on. This kind of food should be more than half of the total protein intake per day. Low protein means that patients with renal insufficiency should strictly control the total protein intake. Generally, it can be calculated as 0.6-0.8g protein /kg per day. The specific amount can be calculated by a specialist or dietitian.

2. For patients with chronic nephritis, adequate carbohydrates should be provided for their normal body energy consumption. In the diet, the sugar content should be appropriately increased to meet the needs of patients for heat energy, and sugar should be used instead of protein to provide heat to the human body. Foods rich in carbohydrates for chronic nephritis include cold rice noodles, bean jelly, rice porridge, potatoes, lotus root, etc.

3. Patients with chronic nephritis should limit their sodium intake. When the patient is seriously ill, there may be severe edema, hypertension or even heart failure. At this time, salt intake should be strictly controlled. For example, do not eat soda biscuits, dried meat floss, alkaline bread, etc. Salt can be replaced with salt-free soy sauce for food seasoning. Until your condition has improved, you can increase salt intake.

4. Chronic nephritis patients should reduce phosphorus and protein intake. Protein is a daily intake of substances, whose intake will directly affect the development and rehabilitation of chronic nephritis. Chronic nephritis patients in early stage will have a certain degree of oliguria and edema. In the diet, you should control the amount of protein intake. However, when you lose weight, you should not over limit it so as not to affect the normal immune function of the body, which is not conducive to the recovery of the disease.

If you have diabetes as well, you should control calories intake.

If diabetes is involved, protein and total calories should be both controlled. Wheat starch food can be adopted as the daily staple food instead of rice.High glycemic index food need to be reduced, such as sugar, honey, sugar, water, sugary drinks, etc. You can also replace rice consumption into the same amount of coarse grain, such as buckwheat, barley, yam, rice, red rice, black rice, etc. But such grains are rich in potassium and phosphorus. If you have high blood phosphorus and potassium, you had better talk with your doctor about the quantity.
